Vassiliki
38º37’.7N – 20º36.4E
At the southwestern tip of the island Lefkas – Capo Ducato – lies the Vassiliki Bay. The bay is known for its strong NW katabatic winds. Katabatic winds of 8 Bft can blow just below the coast. As a result, this place and the beach to the north of the bay are very popular with surfers. Vassiliki is a small fishing village with narrow streets. From the shady terraces you have a beautiful view of the large bay. There are several shops, restaurants and terraces (where you can relax under the trees) near the old fishing port and in the village.
In Vassiliki you will find a supermarket, bakery, post office, pharmacy and clinic. There is a tanker truck at the end of the main street (just outside the village) which can come to the harbour for refuelling purposes. There are also opportunities for horseback riding, scooter and car rental and catamarans and lasers can be rented on the beach.
Sailing towards this area
The entrance to the port is marked by the white lighthouse on Ak. Dhoukato. Once you arrive in the bay, the port is easily visible on the eastern side of the bay.
Mooring
Due to the strong winds in the bay, it is advisable to have a lot of anchor line/chain out and, if necessary, drop the second anchor as far as possible. The wind usually dies down after sunset. You can moor sideways in the outer port, but smaller ships are at a disadvantage here due to the strong winds. The ferry boat that connects Vassilkii with Kefalonia and Ithaka also moors in this outer port. This ferry requires a lot of room and will not deviate from its course!
